American International School of Bucharest

The American International School of Bucharest (AISB) is an international, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from early childhood (two to five-year-old) through grade 12 for students of any nationality. The school was founded in 1962. The school year comprises two semesters extending from late August through mid-June.

Organization: The school is governed by a nine-member, self-perpetuating board of directors. The Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) of the U.S. Embassy serves as chairperson. If the DCM is unable or unwilling to serve as board chair, then the Ambassador of the United States to Romania will appoint another senior level diplomatic officer from the American Embassy to be the AISB Board Chair.

Curriculum: The school provides an international curriculum in English, suited to meet the needs of the international student community in Bucharest. The school offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma in grades 11-12, the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) in grades 6-10, and the IB Primary Years Program (PYP) in grades EC2-5. Specialists in art, drama, cinematography, physical education, music (band/choir), design, computers, Spanish, and French serve students at various grade levels. AISB is not able to provide support services for students who require services beyond reasonable accommodation, which include significant classroom monitoring, modification of general curriculum, intensive one-to-one support within the regular classroom, and/or frequent, ongoing pull-out support from SEN specialist teachers as per the admissions policy and SEN identification practices. The school is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the Council of International Schools (CIS) and is authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB) to offer the IB Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma Programs.

Faculty: In the 2022-2023 school year, AISB has 285 total staff including 176 teachers, 51 of whom are U.S. citizens, 52 host-country nationals, and 73 third-country nationals representing USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Romania, Ecuador, Columbia, Belgium, Germany, Chile, Spain, etc.

Enrollment:  At the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, enrollment was 902. Of the total, 160 were U.S. citizens, 257 were host-country nationals, and 462 were third-country nationals.

Facilities: The school is located on a 10-hectare (28-acre) site north of the city center and opened its doors in the 2001-2002 school year to children in early childhood (three- to four-year-olds) through grade 12. The facility includes spacious classrooms, three library/media centers, three sports centers/gymnasiums, music and art rooms, science and computer laboratories, a performing arts theater, a cafeteria, and many outdoor sports facilities. In August 2017, a new early learning center – a purpose-built facility for two- to five-year-old children – was opened. In August 2019, the secondary school building was extended to accommodate an increased number of students.
