Colegio Maya, founded in 1958, is a fully accredited, private, nonprofit, nonsectarian, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from pre-kindergarten through Grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The school year comprises of two semesters extending from August to December (Semester 1) and January to June (Semester 2).
Organization: The school is governed by a nine-member board of directors elected for two-year terms by the members of the Colegio Maya Association. Membership in the association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the school.
Curriculum: Colegio Maya offers an American international curriculum guided by U.S. Educational Standards and Common Core. The school is recognized and authorized by the Guatemalan Ministry of Education and is fully accredited by Cognia. Colegio Maya offers 13 fully authorized AP classes and requires all AP teachers to receive training before teaching an AP class. In addition, graduation requirements include English, Spanish/foreign language, social studies, science, mathematics, physical education, health, technology, and electives. The student activities program is considered an integral part of the curriculum. All instruction is in English; Spanish is the foreign language offered. Services are provided for students with mild to moderate learning challenges and English language learners. Parents with special needs children are asked to contact the school for a description of the services available.
Faculty: In the 2022-2023 school year, Colegio Maya has 89 total staff including 52 teachers, 31 of whom are U.S. citizens, 15 host-country nationals, and 6 third-country nationals.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, enrollment was 299 students (ECC: 17 students, Grades 1-5: 113 students, Grades 6-8: 72 students, and Grades 9-12: 97 students). Of the total, 90 students were U.S. citizens, 85 students were host-country nationals, and 124 students were third-country nationals.
Facilities: Colegio Maya is located on Santa Catarina Pinula, which is on the outskirts of Guatemala City but well within the metropolitan area. The facility includes several buildings which serve the early childhood, elementary, middle, and high school students. We have an Innovation Hub on campus, which hosts design labs, a presentation and collaboration center, the elementary and secondary libraries, a LEGO lab, and a makerspace classroom (which is equipped with all sorts of tools such as drills, 3-D printers, 3-D scanner, robots, and more). We also have a performing fine arts center (that provides the school with a 336-seat theater, complete with dressing rooms and ample storage space for props and costumes), two gyms, a soccer and track and field complex, and a nature playscape in the elementary area.
Finances: In the 2022-2023 school year, the school’s income derives from tuition. The annual tuition rates (bus not included) are as follows: PK: $11,128.12; K-Grade 5: $16,540.77; Grades 6-8: $17,288.55; Grades 9-11: $17,506.91; and Grade 12: $17,734.54. In addition, a one-time non-refundable $7,500 incorporation fee is collected when a new student is approved for admission. Other fees include an ESL fee per semester (only ESL students) of Q 5,565, and a Learning Resource Center fee per semester (only LRC students) of Q 6,010. Bus service: Q14,300.00 (payment in quetzals). All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars or Guatemalan quetzals.
