The Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) safeguards the State Department’s information and information technology (IT) assets at more than 270 locations around the world. This includes protecting a global cyber infrastructure comprising of networks and mobile devices.

Since its creation in 1986, DSS has continued to expand its cybersecurity capabilities, and in May 2017 established the Cyber and Technology Security directorate.  This directorate uses advanced technology and operational security expertise to better identify and respond to cyber risks and threats, including security challenges originating from hackers, rogue operators, nation states, and insider threats.

DSS cybersecurity core responsibilities include:

  • Cyber Incident response
  • In-depth analysis of malicious activity/attempted intrusions
  • Cyber threat intelligence analysis and reporting
  • Vulnerability assessments and testing
  • Technical security assessments
  • Cyber policy and awareness
  • Law enforcement investigations and technical surveillance
