The International School of Phnom Penh (ISPP) The International School of Phnom Penh (ISPP)is a private, nonprofit, English-language, coeducational day school that was founded in 1989 and offers an educational program from preschool (three-year-old) through grade 12. The school year consists of two semesters, each with two terms, extending from early August to mid-December and from early January to mid-June.
Organization: The school operates under an agreement with the Royal Government of Cambodia through the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports. It is governed by a board of trustees, comprised of unpaid members of the parent community.
Curriculum: The curriculum is international, drawing on various school systems. ISPP is an International Baccalaureate World School, offering the Primary Years, Middle Years, and Diploma Programs. A U.S.-style high school diploma is also offered. In the elementary grades, the school operates a developmentally based preschool and kindergarten to grade 1 program incorporating appropriate academic activities. Grades 2-5 feature a comprehensive curriculum with three classes at each grade level. Music, art, computer studies, physical education, swimming, EAL, French, Mandarin, and Khmer language classes are part of the curriculum for all grades from grade 2 or earlier. Further languages are offered in the secondary school, including a comprehensive mother tongue program. ISPP provides learning support and counselling across all grades and has an in-house child psychologist and a speech and language therapist. The school runs an extensive after-school program, including instrumental music, art, dance, sports, and gymnastics. ISPP is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council of International Schools.
Faculty: In the 2022-2023 school year, ISPP has 271 total staff including 118 teachers, 30 of whom are U.S. citizens, 6 host-country nationals, and 82 third-country nationals. Our faculty represents 31 countries. The majority come from the USA, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom and New Zealand. All faculty hold appropriate educational qualifications. Many hold post-graduate qualifications and specialist certifications in the International Baccalaureate.
Enrollment: In the first term of the 2022-2023 school year, enrollment was 880 students, including 160 U.S. citizens, 275 host-country nationals, and 445 third-country nationals.
Facilities: The school occupies a purpose-built world-class facility seven kilometers south of the Independence Monument in central Phnom Penh. There are five large classroom blocks, a full-sized flood-lit football pitch, and two swimming pools – one a learning pool and the other a 10-lane, 50-meter Olympic-sized pool. In addition, the school has two air-conditioned gyms, a 430-seat theater, a cafeteria, administration building, and large library in the center of campus. All classrooms and offices are air-conditioned. Adjacent to the elementary school is a large playground featuring child-friendly play equipment. Throughout the campus there are numerous trees and shrubs and grassed areas.
Finances: In the 2022-2023 school year, the school’s income is derived from tuition and fees as its only source of revenue. Tuition rates are as follows: early years 1 (full-day): $7,323; early years 2 (full-day) $9,18; kindergarten and grades 1-5: $18,086; grades 6-10: $21,805; and grades 11-12: $23,548. For early years, the school charges a one-time application fee of $250, entrance fee of $750, and a capital fee of $918. For kindergarten–grade 12, the school charges a one-time application fee of $250, an entrance fee of $2,750, and a capital fee of $2,254. English language and learning support services are provided at no cost; however, the mother tongue program can attract additional fees.
