Nagoya International School is a private, coeducational day school that offers an educational program from preschool through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The school was founded in 1964. The school year comprises two semesters extending from mid-August to mid-December and from early January to mid-June.
Organization: The school is governed by a seven to nine-member board of directors, appointed on a self-perpetuating basis for two-year terms. The school is incorporated in both the United States and Japan and has been recognized as a nonprofit organization in Japan. The Japanese Ministry of Education has granted the school status as a legal school body.
Curriculum: The curriculum offered is inclusive in nature, including college preparatory courses. Nagoya International School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and by the Council of International Schools. The school is authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization to deliver all three programs: the Diploma Program (DP), the Middle Years Program (MYP), and the Primary Years Program (PYP). NIS holds membership in the Japan Council of International Schools and the East Asia Regional Council of Schools.
Faculty: In the 2022-2023 school year, NIS has 86 total staff including 67 teachers, 15 of whom are U.S. citizens, 13 host-country nationals, and 29 third-country nationals.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, enrollment was 397 (PK-K: 33; grades 1-5: 146; grades 6-8: 84; grades 9-12: 117). Of the total, 87 were U.S. citizens, 147 were host-country nationals, and 163 were third-country nationals.
Facilities: The school is housed on eight acres of park-like campus. The original 1968 buildings were fully renovated in 2004, and the school has also built significant new structures over its 50-year history. The early years center is housed in an attractive, open-plan, hexagonal building in which spacious, well-lit classrooms surround a middle ‘core’ interactive space. The original 1968 Raymond building houses many elementary and high school classes and also boasts an extensive library and the school ‘commons,’ a central hub for gathering, eating, celebrating, and sharing. The 1999 Wing building houses many middle school classes as well as the ‘I-Space’ – a center for inclusive education, a full-sized gym, drama studio, and music suite. An annex building completed in 2018 houses two grade 5 classrooms. A design lab, built from repurposing the old boiler room in 2019, houses facilities for digital design (3D printing, etc.) and supports the delivery of a quality STEM program. The newest addition, the East Building, was completed in the summer of 2020 and houses a multipurpose hall, which doubles as a full-service auditorium and mini-gym, as well as music and arts facilities, a state-of-the art science department, and a rooftop community space. The sports field was renovated with artificial surfaces in 2006 and a field house was constructed at that time. NIS grounds include ample play space and relaxation space for students and community members. Classroom facilities are modern and the school boasts a robust wireless network. All rooms are carpeted, air-conditioned, and equipped with interactive whiteboards/data projectors.
